Holy smokes! This is the first day I've had off in a while and it feels good. I'm not complaining. I love the work and the fishing has been phenomenal but it's nice to get caught up on a couple things--laundry, emails, billings, blogs, deposits, tying flies...wait; this is supposed to be a day off?
So the 4th of July came and went and from what the folks up in Craig said, it was one of the best fireworks shows in Craig history. It's interesting coming from the Midwest and having spent a number of years in Milwaukee where they have tons of resources for fireworks and each year was a competition to outdo the last. Even in the small town of Brainerd, MN I can remember when the show was out in the fairgrounds and we would run around pretending each boom was a gun-shot we were ducking to get away from. The display got bigger and they moved it to the high school bowl where there was more room and more people could watch. Thousands of people would show up to watch on the hillsides and down on the football field. It was a way to reconnect with friends from school, mid-summer and just get stupid.
Regardless of the difference in size between those shows and what went on in Craig, there was a definite charm that was well appreciated. The efforts of those who worked hard to make the best of what they had brought that nostalgia to which I for one, am grateful. Floating boats out in the river, launching rockets was pretty darn cool. Having others chime in from the Craig bridge and from behind the campgrounds was also fun to watch. The money that was spent by Headhunters, The Trout Shop and the locals was a worthy donation and the time spent by those folks like Ben Hardy, constructing the make-shift barge and coordinating the show was priceless. Thanks guys. It was fun.
Keep 'em where they live y'all.
