Ok, so I feel compelled to tell you about some pretty amazing people I met today at the Helena Food Share. I've picked up a few more shifts through Family Outreach until the guide season starts. Since there aren't a lot of guys that work in the field, picking up extra shifts is pretty easy. I was working with a new consumer, as they are called. He is an adult who is also autistic and although very functional, still needs some supervision.
Anyway, while I was working with him, his mother showed up, wanting to take him to Helena Food Share. It is a food pantry for low-income families and people with disabilities so they can supplement their monthly groceries at no cost. The guy I'm working does have a job but he gets paid by the piece so it averages out to about $2 an hour. He does get other assistance but it doesn't seem to be enough. So off we went.
I have to tell you, the people there were so gracious and helpful. The director was incredible and the volunteers were outstanding. As you might assume, going to a food shelf can be embarrassing for people and they did such a great job of preserving every one's dignity and making people feel welcome that I just have to give a huge KUDOS to everyone there. Great job Helena Food Share.
