The first long weekend of the season kicked off yesterday with some very good fishing and good guys to spend the day with. We started our float at the Craig bridge and took out at the Dearborn. Because of all the other guides putting in at Craig, I decided to row up-stream for about 3/4 of a mile to hit a scum line and riffle that I "knew" would produce. After about a 1/2 hour of fighting the downstream wind, we arrived at the honey-hole just as the wind reached it's max of about 25 mph. The honey-hole? Nothing.
Fortunately for me and my clients, we floated downstream and by the time we got back to the bridge most of the boats were gone and the fishing turned on. As much of a waste it seemed to spend the hour or more to get up-stream and fish a hole that didn't produce, we did allow the other boats to get down-stream and for the rest of the day we pretty much had the river to ourselves. I also learned quickly that the fish weren't going to be stacked up where they usually were, probably due to the lack of bugs, and we changed up our strategy with some pretty damn good results. We blew right through many of the scum lines and toilet bowls we would normally focus on and hit subtle breaks and deep pools off of ledges. My dudes crushed 'em and we had a blast.
On for round two. Keep 'em where they live y'all, in the water not the trees!
