I still work with my little buddy on the weekends during my slow time. He's 12 now and is developing into quite the fishing pal. I took him out yesterday for a few hours in the canyon. He caught some nice rainbows and his first brown yesterday--all trophies to him.
The day before I fished with John Chase and a couple of his buddies from Jackson. The wind was brutal and the fishing sucked for about 80% of it. At some point both boats pulled over and took about a 2 hour break just to see if the wind would lay down. When it didn't we headed down stream. We only had about a mile and a half to go to get to the take-out. John and I nymphed up a few good fish before turning the corner on a flat just above the Dearborn take-out and let me say, it pays to keep your head up.
The other boat fished the hard bank while John and I took the flat. The wind settled just enough to bring every fish on that flat to the surface to chow on the gazillion bugs that were hatching. We spent about an hour picking fish after fish off that flat while the other boat cruised on by. Needless to say, they were pretty disappointed at the take-out when they heard the report. It just goes to show that this time of year it can switch on and off like a light depending on the conditions and you can't just mail it in if you want to take advantage of some of the best dry-fly fishing I've seen ever on the Mo.
Keep 'em where they live...
