It's A Good Kind of Sore
Starting on Mother's Day, I worked a four-day stretch, which isn't a long stretch but if you're not used to it, you can kind of feel worked. It's a good way to ease into the season though. I did a half day with a couple Montana kids as their mother wanted to see them get into the outdoors a little more and thought fly-fishing would be fun for them. I say kids but they're really young men. We had a good day fishing and I think they'll keep it up.
The last few days were with a family from North Dakato, who were very much into the outdoors but never had fly-fished. The three; Dad the son and his girlfriend, jumped in with both feet and although the learning curve was steep, by the end of it they were fishing like pros. The fishing was good for the most part with the window of opportunity shrinking throughout the day as it does when water temps increase. The mornings were typically slow and then caddis start popping in the lower canyon and for a few hours it's lights out. It's not real techy but you definitely can increase your odds with better casting and just being on it. "Hit it Ashley! Hit it!"
On day two with these guys, we went all the way down to Cascade. We started at Prewett Creek, which isn't really something I like doing because it makes the float about twelve miles. With the river at 4,800 cfs, that can make for a long day and it did. The fishing absolutely shut down at around 3:30 with still having four or five miles to go. We gave it everything we had but at some point it's time to cut bait so I rowed out the last few miles. I got home that night and really started feeling my age. Yep, I said it. I'm getting old. Give me a couple weeks though and those marathon trips will feel routine.
Keep 'em where they live...
