The Dearborn River

Matt and Fred from Wolf Creek Angler in Wolf Creek, MT and I headed up the Dearborn River yesterday for what some would say is the most beautiful stretch of water in Montana. Plus, you get to see stuff like this; a very rare sighting of not only a sow black bear and three cubs but all four bears in a cinnamon color phase. We actually thought they were grizzlies at first and there is still some debate but I'm convinced they were black bears. (Bear photo by Matt Hargrave.)

Depending on water levels and clarity, the fishing can get a little tough but the views are spectacular. You might catch more if you weren't so distracted though.

There's a short window if you want to get in on the action. I've got my Maravia ready to go and will be doing rafting trips on the Dearborn for those that want a little adventure. Here's a buddy and fellow outfitter, Dan Troupe rocking the hard boat with clients. He's got bigger kahunas than I do.

We did manage to get a number of good fish as Fred will attest to, holding this nice rainbow. The water was a bit off-color so we set the over/under at four. We did well to far exceed that by landing several nice bows and a few decent browns.

With the snowpack we have and still on target with spring precipitation, the window for floating the Dearborn should last through June. It's a long float with a couple of dicy spots and there are a some tricks to bringing good fish to the net so getting guided isn't a bad way to go. I've still got some openings during what should be the best times to float the Dearborn so check out my website by clicking the logo to the right and give me a shout.

Keep 'em where they live...
