Some people think the October caddis is a mythical creature, created by fly fishermen in order to give some hope at a time where all there are for bugs are those pesky little, size 24 pseudos. However, they are real and fish do get on them. If you see one fluttering around, you might as well start chucking big stimulators and don't let them sit on the water too long without moving them or you're just wasting your time. Get them skating and hold on.
I had a client a few years back about this same time of the year who was actually a guide on the Beau River in Alberta. We saw a few of these guys flopping around and he says, "Watch this."
He proceeded to tie on an orange stimulator and chucked it up on the bank, into the rocks and under the willow trees. He then stripped the bug back as if it were a streamer and the browns came out from every little crevice and ever pocket to absolutely crush it. Needless to say, I was a little blown away.
Keep 'em where they live...
