Do you have a child who might not be overly competitive that needs some activities to work on skills and character traits that he/she doesn't get by staring at a screen all day? Check out some of the archery opportunities in your area. It's a great way to get kids interested in something other than the Xbox and it's relatively cheap.
The technology for youth bows right now is kind of crazy. For a couple hundred bucks, you can get into a bow with sites and quiver and arrows that blows away the old long bows and recurves we started out with when I was a kid. And, they are so much more forgiving and just a lot more fun to shoot. This particular bow is a Diamond Atomic but there are plenty out there to chose from that range from $50 to $350. You have to be careful, though. Some of those bows are pretty lethal--even drawing only 15lbs.
This is Patrick in the picture above with his shot of the day. We were shooting together, on different targets mind you, and he sent this arrow smack dab into the bulls eye just as I was ready to send one down range. His reaction to the shot was enough to throw me off, which tells you how excited he was to find the mark. I know to some, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal but I'm telling you, if you can find activities like this that garner that much excitement and are interests you can share, you might just set yourselves up for a life-long pursuit of actually doing stuff together. How fun would that be?
Keep 'em where they live...
