September first, it's only been in the low 60's for highs and cloudy, and Brett Favre is back on the football field--perfect. I just checked the flows for the Missouri and it is a little higher than normal, which is awesome, and the temperature at the damn is only about 60 degrees. In the past couple days, the water temps haven't gotten above 62 degrees, which is also awesome, and means the fish are not only happy, but should start looking to bulk up for the winter. The cold weather does knock down the hopper activity but if we get a few warm days with a little wind, look out. There's no better time to chuck big dry flies than a warm day in September just before the browns start to spawn and this September is shaping up to be pretty damn good. And if the hoppers aren't out and there isn't a considerable hatch to bring the big fish up, chucking streamers isn't a bad way to go either. The cool thing about this time of year is options!
I went up to the damn yesterday with a new-comer and we did incredibly well nymphing. There were only a couple wade fishermen and even fewer boats. Although the weeds are an annoyance through the canyon, I took a couple down stream two days ago and did pretty well throwing streamers until fish started coming up. Unfortunately, the weather kind of put a halt to the fishing as the two got wet and a little chilled to the bone so we left a lot of fish out there. If conditions hold, the next couple months should be bomber. Hope to see you out here.
Keep 'em where they live...
