This is Cutter sitting in the blind, waiting for something to happen in the last week of the 2020 waterfowl season. He had just found a pile of cow dung to roll in...with very few ducks on the river and nothing to get them moving, that's the only joy this pup was finding.
Why has this season been so sparse for waterfowl on the river? The birds are there. If you have access to the fields, I'm sure you shot plenty of geese and some mallards. And then they figure out where the dangerous fields are and they move and if you have access, you can follow them. But if you were hunting the river, good luck. There were too few ducks and geese because the weather up North wasn't cold enough to bring them down and there was just too much open water for them to have to bunch up on the Upper River. Last season withstanding, because I was busy working on a place to live, this was the toughest waterfowl season I've seen since I got back into it 14 years ago.
The flip-side is that the big game season was really good to me and because of that, I get to share a ton of sausage and other goodies with friends and clients. That's right. If you book with Montana Dream Fishing Outfitters, ask to sample some wild meats! I'm totally down with sharing!
I am looking forward to 2021. Why? Because I feel like we are turning the corner on the Corona Virus and people are feeling more confident to be traveling and being safe. Because of that, bookings are coming in. Now, trust me. I stress the idea of feeling safe. We're not out of the woods yet but I believe in this administration doing everything they can to get this pandemic under control. And I believe in us as a country to come together and make this happen. We will get through this.
I'm also really excited to have The Montana Dream Cast up and running again. Scott Hirschi and I have been producing new episodes with special musical guests and are looking forward to doing much more of that. Next week we have John McLellan from The Clintons scheduled to join us. If you've never heard John perform, you really need to check this out. He's a hoot. Just plug us in and enjoy the ride. You can find The Montana Dream Cast podcast on any of your favorite, free podcast sites.
As for the business of guiding and what I will hopefully be able to offer clients as well as friends and family, that's exciting too. The plan is to build a garage with a two-bedroom apartment on top. I'm working with a few contractors and still waiting to for the bank to approve the plan but I'm confident it will work out. The City has actually been pretty open to my plans so that's a big hurdle to not have in front of me.
To be honest, the place isn't in the most prestigious part of Helena however, the Sixth Ward is up and coming and there's a lot of revitalization happening. Yes, there were a few meth houses that were demolished and re-built and there are a few more that need to be taken care of, but there is also a brand new school just two blocks away and most of the problem folk have been pushed out. The Ward is on the rise and I'm doing my part to class the place up a bit.
And then there's the Packers...just sayin...
I hope, if you've been following The Montana Dream over the years, you can come out and share with Cutter and I what an amazing resource we have in the Missouri River this summer, what an amazing town Helena is, and experience everything Montana and the Dream have to offer. And eat some amazing sausage! Give me a call at 406-403-8163 or visit mdfishingoutfitters.com and let's have some damn fun this year!!!
Keep 'em where they live...
