Day One, 2025--Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

This is Kristi. She's a traveling nurse, working out here in Montana and decided to check off a bucket-list item yesterday. She's my first client of the year and got her grip and grins for Grandma early. With the wind howling and temps hovering around 40, we only spent a few hours on the river and were able to put several really nice rainbows in the net. I'd say that's a good day for a flatlander who's never held a fly-rod in her hand.

The bennies for spring fishing on the Missouri River are abundant. For one, it's a lot quieter than what it will be in June or July. Weekends will have some traffic on warm, sunny days but most folks stay up high. If you're willing to start anywhere downstream from Craig, you might have the river to yourself.

The water is still consistent, running at around 3,000cfs. When the sun is out and the riverbed warms up a bit, the bugs pop and fish start to wake up from their winter slumber. They get hungry. Right now, it's pretty much just midges if you're looking for fish feeding on the surface. Sow bugs and the hot-bead stuff will get 'em underneath in the deep, slow pools and don't sleep on streamers. I got couple good browns the other day throwing a huge articulated streamer in the frog water. Not gonna lie, I may have been looking for a pike. (As a side note, people are finding northerns in the Mo. If you get one, whack it. Those toothy pricks will put a hurt on the trout.)

You can also find some deals this time of the year. We, at Montana Dream Fishing Outfitters, are running a full day of fishing at a half-day price through May. And if you book now until the end of May, you can get 2024 rates for trips booked throughout the 2025 season. Due to the new permitting requirements for commercial trips starting at the dam, we will be bumping our prices up starting June 1st.

If you're interested in booking a trip, check out the website, mdfishingoutfitters.com. Let's get out fishing!

Keep 'em where they live...
