I can't say this is my favorite thing to tie but last year the hot beads really caught on out here and I'm not going into the season un-prepared. I bet you can catch fish with just the bead on a hook out here without tying any materials on. I've got all my worms and now I'm almost down with these damn things and now all we need is high water again...
The reality is, these things will work early season regardless of the water situation and although worms of every kind work best with high water, they will work in normal water too. Regardless of the bug hatch, fish gotta eat. If the conditions are like the last few years, fish will be more keyed in on worms getting washed into the river and eggs from spawning fish. Plus, they're just a lot easier to see if the water is a little off. I'm banking on normal water this year so I'm NOT tying more than a couple hundred hot bead stuff and my worm box is in the 200 range as well. Next up; lightning bugs of every color and in sizes of #14's-#20's--then love bugs, zebra midges, and caddis puppas.
What about dry flies you ask? I have so many left over from the past couple years of high water I think I'm covered.
I'd feel bad if I didn't give a shout-out to Danny Beck for bringing us a much needed breath of fresh air over the weekend although it kind of stirred things up a bit at Joe's. It's amazing how a couple women and some shots can turn a group of guys into complete ass-holes. Way to put your best foot forward Lindow.
Keep 'em where they live...
