It's not quite hopper season yet and we weren't quite throwing hoppers but we were blind casting with big ugly dries and it was epic.
I took Dave Glem out yesterday for a free be. If you remember, Dave sold me his boat last year and floated me a no-interest loan until I could pay it off. In return, I get to take him out fishing when he's out here. It works out pretty well and although I probably could pay off the loan right now, it's also been a good way to spend time on the water with a friend. And, he can only fish for a few hours before his back stiffens up so he likes to sit down and row.
Yesterday was a heat wave out there and the fishing was really good. Dave likes to catch fish and isn't opposed to get down after them. When the opportunities come up for catching them on dries however, he's all in. We did get a few to eat the yellow sallies early, but then the temps soared and the fishing got tough. We also started crapping out, which doesn't make it any easier.
Dave took the oars and I nymphed up a few fish before getting kind of bored. We switched back through some of the 'tough' water on the Mo and he caught a few more. As the water flattened out, Dave started rowing again and I picked up my dry-fly rod and started blind casting with something big I thought there might be a chance a big brown might chase. I was looking down at the water trying to figure out what bugs were on the surface when I heard a splash and looked up to find a ripple of rings where my fly was.
I set the hook on a 20 inch brown and was amazed that he actually took such a big bug this early. I chucked it again and again, another brown crushed my bug...and then another and another. That last hour of fishing was probably the most fun I've had on the water in years.
I told Dave we could switch it up but he refused. I was having so much fun. It was like being a little kid again and I think he was having fun watching. Thanks a bunch Dave. I really did have a blast.
Keep 'em where they live...
