You know it's busy when you're clients that normally fish the Big Horn comment on how many boats they're seeing. I think every guide yesterday went down the canyon; most were guides from Missoula, Bozeman, Livingston and Kalispell. No offense but I'm really pulling for the water to come down on all these other rivers so guys can go back to work on their home waters. It shouldn't be long now. At least everyone was playing nice.
The instability with the weather made the fishing a little tough in the morning. At least that's what I'm going with. We did get some on PMD's, caddis and the big stuff but right when we thought we had something figured out, we would go 20 minutes without touching anything. Fish were moving into the faster, shallow stuff though, which probably means they are looking for PMD's. Lighten the load and find the gravel and watch out for whitie, he's out in full-force.
We did have a pretty good PMD and caddis hatch in the afternoon. Doug Grey, my client from San Fran, and I stuck some good fish on dries. Not having had the experience of throwing dries on a river like the Missouri; I think Doug found a new love. There really isn't anything like the feeling of throwing that perfect cast and watching a brown come up to slurp.
Keep 'em where they live...
