Off the river at five and up in the mountains by six. With only a couple hours, I figured I would take a quick hike. Unfortunately, my little honey hole had two trucks parked at the trail head so I went deep...about three miles deep. My quick little hike turned into a six mile loop, getting back to my truck about an hour after dark.
Conventional wisdom says elk don't move during the day with a full moon and 80 degree temps. I gambled on the weather coming in; maybe catching them coming out to the parks early for some grazing before it get's cold. Nope. Nothing talking and nothing moving until I got back to my truck and heard an elk down in the creek bottom raking his antlers in the brush. (Could have been a moose.) Maybe it was more dumb than ambitious. One thing is certain though; you can't catch a fish if your fly isn't in the water and you won't shoot anything sitting on the couch...
Keep 'em where they live...
