The Mighty Mo is coming down. The Little Prickly Pear is too, and so is the Dearborn!! Get your dry-fly gear out. It's about to get crazy good!
Hold on there kiddos. The LPP is coming down and the snow is pretty much gone on the Divide so it won't come up again unless we get rain. We are going to get rain. The Dearborn will get the rain too and the snow in the Scapegoats hasn't even started melting. As for the Missouri flows; they have brought it down to around 13,800 cfs from just under 15 but that won't last for long. Fort Peck is over 100% full and with all the flooding in the Midwest, they are trying to give those folks as much relief as they can until we have to open the gates. I was talking to one of the guides here last week and thought they might do this. All that means is that once Canyon Ferry and Hauser and Holter fill up to capacity, they will have to open it up. If we get lots of rain and/or 80 degree temps for a week, watch out. The 20,000 cfs will be here.
As for fishing, the wind has made getting drifts tough. We deal with it all the time out here and we know how to make it happen for the most part. Fish don't care about wind and as long as they can see, they will eat. But even the best of them find it tough in gusts over 40mph. If you get a drift, you will catch fish. The lower river should clear up a little in the next couple days so going low will become another option--at least until the Dearborn blows again. It nymphs well with these high flows.
Keep 'em where they live..
