Crappie

Many of the guides and outfitters are taking trips to cool places like Belize or the Keys or steelheading in Idaho and Washing but me, I'm sitting on a chunk of ice fishing for crappies and walleye. These guys, the crappies, are VERY tasty and for my money, the best fresh water fish a person can eat hands down. They are a little tricky but if you can find them, the action can be pretty fast. They're usually suspended in deep water in the winter and the bite can be early morning or late in the afternoon and at night. Each lake is different and with 10,000 here in Minnesota, you can spend a lot of time figuring out even a small portion of them. I've caught them in 43 feet of water 10 feet off the bottom, 14 feet right on the bottom and 15 feet down in 35 feet of water. Get your cheater out, (the vexilar,) and put some miles on the lakes. You may even have to chase them for a while. Or, make some friends with the locals.

Keep 'em where they live...
