We're kind of in between hatches right now on the Mo. We're still getting some BWO's and there are a few caddis popping around but there isn't a lot happening to get fish really keyed in on any one bug. That can make for some pretty tough days when the sun is high and the water is on the drop. They aren't looking for worms too much anymore either because not a lot of stuff is getting dumped into the river off the banks so what do you do? Go big!
John LaRue and I fished the Lower Canyon yesterday with one of his neighbors. I had heard it was fishing pretty tough but I haven't fished that stretch all season and neither had John so we thought we'd do a little recon and try figuring some things out. Knowing we weren't going to see a lot of bugs, we rigged up with some big stuff and started hitting seems. We hooked up within a minute or two on a really nice brown and then kept hooking fish down the Day Maker hole through the Cookie Jar.
We hit a couple slow spots but for doing just a short float--about 3 hours, we put enough fish in the net that would have made a pretty good full day out of it. We even got one to eat a dry in the big swirl below the Cookie Jar. We got a few on caddis pupas and a few on prince nymphs but the hot fly was...
I'm not going to tell you what was really working but I will say it was a lot bigger than what most people would be throwing right now. Sometimes, when fish seem like they're are getting picky, throw something big at them and they will respond. There's not enough food in the system to get them going but put the T-bone in front of them and enough of those big browns will move to check it out; enough of them to make a slow day pretty damn good.
Keep 'em where they live...
