Mid-March on the Mo

I'd say you'd have to be pretty hard-core to decide to fly fish immediately after what has been the coldest month on record out here in Montana. It was so cold that I decided to leave and head south for a few days to do some golfing. The other day however, the sun came out and the temps gradually climbed into the less frigid and more doable side of the thermometer. It's still cold in the morning and as I was putting the boat in and felt my fingers tingling, I wondered what the hell we were doing.

It didn't take too long for Bob Page from the BobKat Motel to land the first fish and although the expression on my face still says, "This is f'n cold," you can tell it's well worth it to him. As the guides on the rods stopped freezing up, the fishing definitely picked up.

There are a couple things about this time of the year that makes fly fishing magical; the rainbows are all colored up and getting ready to do their thing and you will be fishing in solitude. There's also something about these crisp days with the snow in the background that makes for a lasting memory and great photos with the white background.

And after over 10 years of fishing with Greg Beebe, he's finally learned how to hold a fish for a photo! Now we gotta work on dropping that hoodie. But maybe that's just his thing.

Great day on the water. Well worth the effort to dig the boat out of the snow. If you want to get in on the action: Montana Dream Fishing Outfitters. Book your dream trip TODAY!

Keep 'em where they live...
